Summer is fast approaching and in the hot Utah desert it is more than understandable that you may opt out of having fun in the summer sun and stay inside where it’s cool every now and then.
But, you’re not the only one who will seek refuge in your air conditioned home. Your refreshingly cool living space is also very welcoming to all kinds of bugs and critters that will also try to escape the heat this summer.
Everyone wants to keep bugs out of their house, but not everyone wants to go about it the same way. It is normal for the typical bug spray and treatments to be used when trying to rid your home of these pesky invaders, but it is not the healthiest way.

- Citrus Fruit Peels:After you’ve finished pealing that sweet, delicious looking orange don’t throw away the peelings just yet! You can rub these peels along your window seals or grate the peels and sprinkle them in the doorways, windows or wherever the bugs tend to enter your home.Your house well smell great and the citrus y smell that we love but bugs hate will make it so the bugs will not want to be anywhere near your home.
- Clean house: Keep a clean house! Bugs like to take up residents where they can easily hide. Leaving clutter around your home makes your home more inviting to these pests. Keeping a decluttered living space also makes it easier to spot when bugs do try to take up residence. Be sure to keep your home in order. Remember to vacuum, sweep, mop and wash surfaces at least once a week to keep your house looking amazing and to keep the bugs away!
- Cinnamon: Cinnamon. There are a couple of different ways to use cinnamon to ward spiders and other pesky intruders in the home. Just like the citrus fruit peels, you can use it in certain parts of the house where you know bugs like to enter your home. One way to ward off bugs is to sprinkle cinnamon around the baseboards of the floor. You can also diffuse cinnamon essential oil to keep bugs away as well.
- Plants: Have you ever wanted to plant a garden or do you have the desire to keep plants in your home, but you’re not sure what plants you want? Consider having plants in and near your home that repel pests such as mosquitoes and other bugs. You can place these plants by your front door and by your windows. Plants that repel bugs include garlic, mint, citronella, basil, mint, lavender and even bay leaves. Some of these plants are so hardy that they will grow back year after year! Some of these plants have a nice scent that humans love and bugs hate and they can add to the aesthetics of your home. Plants that are known to repel bugs include catnip, lemongrass and more!
